About

The king's apartment is all the rooms of the Palace of Versailles that served as a special apartment to Louis XIV. Overlooking the marble courtyard, these lounges are located in the "old castle" at the location of the former Queen's apartment. Because of the inconvenience of the Grand Appartement du Roi and the construction of the Galerie des Glaces, Louis XIV had this apartment built shortly after the death of Queen Marie-Thérèse by his first architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart. In the 18th century, the apartment was converted to a workplace for Louis XV and Louis XVI. At first, the apartment consisted of a string of eight living rooms exiting the landing of the queen's staircase. The number of pieces was reduced to seven in 1701 and six in 1755.

Vestibule: The vestibule is panelled in polychrome marbles and illuminated by two windows overlooking the royal courtyard. In 1701, in order to illuminate the staircase, Louis XIV had the wall pierced opposite the windows transforming the vestibule into loggia. At the end of the reign of Louis XIV, the vestibule was used as an entrance to the king's apartment, to the Queen's Grand Apartment and to Madame de Maintenon's apartment.
