History: The Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu was founded in 1043 by Robert de Turlande, canon of Brioude and son of a tale of Aurillac. At his death in 1068 the abbey had about 300 monks. In 1342, a former monk of the Chaise-Dieu, Peter Roger de Beaufort became pope under the name Clement VI. As soon as he was appointed, he decided to have the old Romanesque church of his early years rebuilt and his tomb established. On May 3, 1344, Clement VI announced his decision to rebuild the abbey. He is the sole decision maker.
