basilique Sainte-Maxellende
Sainte-Maxellende Basilica in Caudry is a minor Catholic basilica located in Caudry, northern department, Hauts-de-France region. Built in the 1890s, it reveals the importance of worship to the saint of Caudry.
The Basilica of Caudry is dedicated to Saint Maxellende, a young Caudresian murdered by her suitor Harduin of Amerval in the 7th century.
Construction: The neo-Gothic building was built according to the plans of the architect Louis Marie Cordonnier from 1887 to 1890. A place of pilgrimage of the blind and visually impaired, the church was elevated to the rank of minor basilica by a papal brief on 3 September 1991 by Pope John Paul II. The basilica is 72 m long by 36 m long and its bell tower peaks at 75 m. It has a carillon of 3 bells: "Vox Dei", 2 tons, gives the do; "Pax", 1,700 kg, gives the re and "Maxellende", 1,500 kg, gives the fa.
Interior of the basilica: Inside, the large nave peaks at 20 m under a vault key and the two lower sides at 8 m. The transept ends with two chapels, the one on the left dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and the one on the right...
