About

The Notre-Dame-de-l'Île chapel is a Catholic chapel located in Luzech, France.

Location: The church is located in the French department of Lot on the territory of the commune of Luzech.

History: The origin of the chapel is unknown. It was said that on several occasions the Virgin appeared on the sides of the Cevenna. She went down to the shore of the Lot, closed her apron, spread it over the water and used it to pass over the other bank. The inhabitants of Luzech were said to have built the chapel and the boatmen placed themselves on its protection. In addition, the Notre-Dame-de-l'Île chapel, facing Saint-Vincent-Rive-d'Olt, had to protect the navigators when they directed their boats in the rapids around the peninsula. Until the canal was drilled in 1840, the watery rocks and violent currents in the Lot loop around Luzech threatened the crews and their cargo. This chapel is the place of an important pilgrimage which takes place during a week of September. In 1851, it brought together up to 6,000 people. The chapel was attested in 1285. It was left in 1374 to allow its repair...
