The Saint-Sauveur Basilica in Rocamadour is a former Catholic collegiate church in the Cité religieux, which was erected as a minor basilica in 1913. In the sanctuary, it is located above the crypt Saint-Amadour.
History: The Marian pilgrimage of Rocamadour has been one of the major sites of the Christian world since the Middle Ages. In a bubble of Pope Pascal II in 1105, mention is made of a church of Sainte-Marie or Notre-Dame. Following the discovery in 1166 of the intact body presented as that of Saint Amadour, the whole religious city was built. The church became collegiate and then the pilgrimage gradually perished until the revolutionary era. While the sanctuary was in an important state of disrepair and the former Saint-Sauveur collegiate was still in service, the bishops of Cahors decided to restore the site from 1842. The roof of Saint-Sauveur's church was to be redone and the exterior wall of the midday face was overhanging thirty centimetres under the push of the vaults overlaid with rubble.
