menhirs du bois du Fourgon
The Bois du Fourgon alignments are a group of four megalithic alignments (numbered G1, G2, G2 bis, G3) located in Avrillé, in the French department of Vendée.
History: Three menhirs of alignment G2 are classified as historical monuments by the list of 1889. The Bois de Fourgon site was searched by Gérard Benéteau and his team during the 1990s. Among other things, this search campaign revealed new menhirs and alignments.
Alignment: Its location in a landlocked wood, itself included in an old closed estate built around a Renaissance castle since the end of the 16th century, the castle of the Guignardière, has probably allowed the good conservation of the megalithic complex. The site consists of four north-south oriented megalithic alignments, a dolmen, a megalithic trunk, two megalithic quarries, and several tumuli, including an east-west oriented ovalous tumulus surrounded by a ditch (approximately 12 m long by 6 m wide) between the G1 and G2 groups. The main complex is located at the top of the plateau, at an altitude of 38 m to 47 m.
