oppidum de Variscourt
The Old Reims Oppidum, or Old Reims Oppidum, also known as the Condé-sur-Suippe Oppidum/Variscourt and Variscourt Oppidum, is a former protohistoric fortified Rème settlement located on the territory of the communes of Condé-sur-Suippe, Variscourt and Guignicourt, in the department of Aisne. The site presents itself as an "oppidum of confluent", one of the angles of which lies at the junction of the Aisne with the Suippe, and as "oppidum of plain", partially enclosed by a powerful rampart with a ditch, the fortified city installed and built on an alluvial terrace. The occupation and use of the opidum reme du Vieux-Reims, classified among the fortified oppidas of "phases 1 and 2", extend over a short period, dated from the Tenum "D1B", to the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C., chronologically established, thanks to the dates of the instrumentum — ceramics, coins, ecofacts and bone remnants — collected as well as the analyses of wood residues, between 120/110 and 90/80 B.C.
