About

The chapel Saint-Christophe of Tain-l'Hermitage, is located in the vineyard of this commune of Drôme, at the top of the hill of the Hermitage, overlooking the city.

History: The present chapel was built in 1864. Local legend suggests that it was erected at the site of an ancient Roman temple, dedicated to Heracles, preceding a first chapel. This primitive chapel, mentioned in texts of the year 1100 as chapel of a priory attached to Saint-André-le-Bas of Vienna, would have welcomed the knight Henri-Gaspard of Sterimberg, in the 13th century, upon his return from the crusade of the Albigeois (1209-1229), to retreat there. He planted the vine there to produce wine for the use of pilgrims and travelers.

Description: The chapel has been included in the inventory of historical monuments since January 10, 1934. Since 1919, the chapel has been owned by the older Paul Jaboulet winery. After a restoration, in the 1980s, the parvis of the chapel served in the ephemeral bar estate on summer evenings.
