sanctuaire de Trémonteix
The Shrine of Tremonteix is a Roman shrine with double fanum with cella unique in relation to a Roman villa. It is 2.5 km from the centre of the ancient city of Augustestonemetum/Clermont-Ferrand, France. Discovered in 2009 on the occasion of a diagnosis of preventive archaeology, the villa was searched by a team of the National Institute of Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap) between 2010 and 2011, and partially destroyed by the modifications made as a result of these operations.
Only the sanctuary, which was listed as historic monuments in 2012, was preserved in a green area. Located at the foot of the coasts of Clermont-Ferrand, the archaeological site has been deeply buried by landslides, which has resulted in very good conservation. Virgin of all protohistoric occupation, the valley of Tremonteix is built from the Upper Empire.
To a first establishment interpreted as a Roman villa succeeds a second establishment built around the beginning of the third century, similarly interpreted, and endowed with a sanctuary built with a single hold. The reconstruction of this establishment, in the course of the third century, does not seem to have led to reorganization...
