About

The German military cemetery in Orglandes is a cemetery where 10,152 German soldiers fell during the Battle of Normandy, mainly during the fighting in North Cotentin. This cemetery is located near the village of Orglandes, in the north of the Manche department. The site was initially a former American temporary cemetery, but where German soldiers were also buried.

The American bodies were transferred to the American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer after 1945. The cemetery was later built between 1956 and 1961 by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge. To the 7,758 German soldiers already buried, other bodies will be added isolatedly buried in the area.

General Wilhelm Falley, the first German general killed in the Battle of Normandy (on the night of 5-6 June), was buried there, as was General Heinz Hellmich. The cemetery was officially inaugurated on 20 September 1961. It is a fairly simple composition with a large slightly treed lawn.

The bodies are mostly grouped by four or six under a grey stone cross.
