The Monkey Mountain is an animal park located in Kintzheim, in the department of Bas-Rhin, in the Grand Est region of France. Created in 1969, it spans 24 hectares of Vosges forest and welcomes about 240 macaques from Barbaria (Macaca sylvanus), also called Magots, in semi-freedom The park allows an immersion in the social life of this endangered primate species, native to the North African mountains. Without cages and barriers, visitors can observe the natural behaviors of monkeys, including social interactions, hierarchy, parental care and youth games.
The mountain of monkeys is part of a pedagogical, scientific and conservatory approach, with the aim of raising public awareness, supporting behavioural research, and participating in conservation programmes in collaboration with partners in Morocco. This park is the first of a European network dedicated to this species, which also includes the Monkey Forest in Rocamadour (France), Affenberg Salem (Germany), and since 2005 Trentham Monkey Forest, located in Staffordshire, UK.
