abbatiale Saint-Philibert de Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu
Saint-Philibert Abbey of Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu is an abbey founded in the ninth century by Benedictine monks led by their Abbé Arnoul, located in Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu in France. Only the abbey church and some buildings around it remain. A Carolingian-style building, he welcomed for a time the body of Saint Philibert whose name the commune will draw. Following the Norman attack, the monks fled with the saint's body and took refuge in Tournus. The community is then reforming to found a priory. Used in the 19th century as a covered market, the abbey was no longer used to celebrate worship. Excavations revealed the sarcophagus of the saint and the building was classified as historical monuments in 1896. The abbey has been reassigned to worship since 1936. Today it is one of the important monuments of the country of Retz open to visitors.
