About

The American Dead Monument (also known as "La Fontaine") is a memorial located in the city of Tours commemorating the assistance of the "Services of Supply" of the "American Expeditionary Forces" to French troops during the First World War. The SOS's mission was to support and refuel the soldiers present at the front against the Germans, operating from many bases that they installed all over France, especially in Tours. Thanks to their assistance, many achievements were made, including the construction of 1,500 locomotives in France during the war.

The development of this work was the initiative of the American Battle Monuments Commission, then chaired by General John Pershing, who wanted to offer France an opportunity to strengthen its ties with the United States. The monument is made by architects Arthur Loomis Harmon, Pierre Lahalle and Georges Levard. It consists of two major elements: a limestone fountain fed by 17 m3 of water, and a bronze statue culminating at its summit.
