jardin Félix-Tisserand
The Parc de la Colonne, also known as the Félix-Tisserand Garden, is a public garden in Toulouse located in Jolimont, next to the Toulouse Observatory garden. Its creation was decided in 1830 to celebrate the Battle of Toulouse on April 10, 1814. The latter saw the Napoleonic troops led by Marshal Soult and the Anglo-Hispano-Portuguese troops of the Wellington Marshal clash.
A plan in this park also recalls the course of the conflict, which took place in part at this very place, during the battle for the defense of the Redout. Designed by Urban Vitry, it was inaugurated on 24 July 1839. It consists of a large lawn along with an alignment of cedars in which stands an obelisk, a memorial to the battle.
Commonly called the "column", it was built entirely of brick between 1835 and 1839. Its total height is around 30 m and it rests on a square vault (4 m by 4), 5.45 m high. Three sides of the vault bear a part of the sentence "AUX BRAVES MORTS FOR PATRY" - "ACKNOWLEDGING TOULOUS" - "BATAILLE OF 10 April 1814" and the fourth has a door.
