The old church Saint-Nicaise was a church located in the southern part of the old town of Reims (now department of the Marne) in France. It was the abbey of the Benedictine abbey, which was destroyed in 1793.
History: The Saint-Nicaise Abbey was founded to welcome pilgrims who came to worship the relics of the martyr bishop of Reims, Saint Nicaise (Vth century). The abbey church followed a Saint-Agricole-et-Saint-Vital church, created in the fourth century. Saint Nicaise had been buried there: it was the place of traditional burial of bishops in the Gallo-Roman era. It was replaced in 1060 by a Benedictine establishment to accommodate pilgrims. Although several times repaired, the church was very dilapidated in the 12th century.
The construction of a splendid abbey church, considered to be one of the masterpieces of Gothic architecture at its peak, was started in 1229 or 1231 by Hugues Libergier and completed in 1263 by Robert de Coucy, although its successive embellishments will continue until the seventeenth century.
