Abbey church
abbatiale Saint-Sauveur de Redon
The Saint-Sauveur Abbey is a Catholic church located in Redon, Ille-et-Vilaine, France. Located north of the former Saint-Sauveur Abbey in Redon, it was the abbey church until 1790. On that date, the abbey is abolished; the church is then assigned to the parish, while the convent buildings become a high school.
Construction began in the 11th century. The Romanesque nave, amputated by its first five spans following a fire in 1780, remains from that time. The transept, built in the twelfth century, is particularly remarkable: its cross is inspired by contemporary constructions in southwestern France; The bedside dates from the last third of the thirteenth century.
It is in line with the very unified and rigorous constructions of the radiant Gothic architecture of Île-de-France. Finally, the bell tower came from a building campaign after that of the bedside, which aimed to create a monumental facade. As this project remained unfinished, only the bell tower, which was separated from the church during the fire of 1780, remained.
