Benedictine abbey
abbaye d'Alet-les-Bains
The Abbey of Alet-les-Bains, founded in the 10th century, was a Benedictine abbey in the commune of Alet-les-Bains. Between 1318 and 1801, his abbey, raised to the rank of cathedral, was the seat of the bishopric of Alet, first under the name of Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the name of the abbey was then Notre-Dame d'Alet Abbey, then — to the destruction of the abbey during the wars of Religion — under that of Saint-Benoît Cathedral. Since 2009, it has been the seat of the titular bishop of Alet. The cathedral and several elements of the abbey are protected as historical monuments, by the list of historical monuments of 1862 and by a decree of 1922.
