About

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Montligeon, dedicated to "Our Lady of the Souls of Purgatory", is a pilgrimage church, the centre of a sanctuary dedicated to prayer for the deceased. It is located in La Chapelle-Montligeon, small commune in the Perche region, in the southeast of the department of Orne. The establishment of the pilgrimage centre was due to the initiative of Abbé Paul Buguet, parish priest of La Chapelle-Montligeon in 1878 when he died in 1918.

Concerned about the need to pray for the souls of the deceased and the need to revitalize the economy of his village, in 1884 he founded the "Expiatory Work for the deliverance of souls from purgatory" and was encouraged in his action by Pope Leo XIII, of whom he received the title of apostolic prothonotary. The basilica is a large neo-Gothic building erected from 1894 to 1911 by architect Maître Tessier, which brings together many works of art (glass windows, mosaics, statues). Its stained glass windows, equipped with all the windows, are renowned and possess the dual peculiarity of forming a panorama of glass art from 1917 to 1971 and addressing only the only theme of the Eschatology and Communion of Saints.
