About

The column of the Weitbruch Forest, often named abusively Milestone in memory of the ancient road network of Upper Germania, is a stele whose origin is not known with certainty. It is located in the communal forest, north of the town of Weitbruch, in the Lower Rhine. With no Latin inscription proved at the time of its discovery, the hypothesis that it is the vestige of a Roman route terminal remains highly questionable, and has been abandoned by specialized literature since the late nineteenth century.

Thus, it does not seem[ref. necessary] retained as such by the volume on the Bas-Rhin of the Archaeological Map of Gaul published in 2001 by Pascal Flotté and Matthieu Fuchs. The stele was hammered and engraved after its discovery in 1859, and was re-used several times.
