castrum de Montpaon
The Montpaon Castrum is a troglodyte habitat structure located on the territory of the commune of Fontvieille in the Alpilles (Bouches-du-Rhône) massif. It was populated mainly between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. A sporadic occupation continues for the next two centuries.
Dependence of the house of the Baux, located a few kilometers to the east, he probably participated in the defense of the territory of the Baux from the end of the Baussenque wars of the late 12th century. It was an ideal monitoring point on the Baux marshes, a coveted fishing area. Scheduled searches have been conducted since 2008.
Illegal searchers looking for metal furniture have partly damaged the site.
