About

Eauze Cathedral is a former cathedral located in Eauze, Gers department. Elusa, the former name of the city, was home to the metropolitan seat of Novempopulania, which was probably created in the third century. The only sure date is 314, when the Bishop of Eauze, Mammertimus, is quoted at the Council of Arles.

Following the Viking invasions and the destruction which they generated, probably in 864, the Metropolitan title was given by Pope John VIII to the Bishop of Auch, Airardus, by a letter dated 13 June 879. The diocese of Eauze disappeared in the ninth century. In 1865 the Archbishop of Auch gave him his title as cathedral.[ref.
