The Cathedral of Sainte-Anne d'Apt, placed throughout the Middle Ages under the dual patronage of Notre-Dame and Saint Castor, is the cathedral of the ancient diocese of Apt. Since 2009, it has been the seat of the titular bishop of Apt. Located in the city of Apt, it has been listed as a historic monument since 1846.
It is one of the oldest churches in the West to honour the worship of Anne, the aileule of Christ. Already during the 12th century his feast was celebrated there on July 26 during a nine - lesson service. His worship was finally established in the 14th century.
Urban V, as early as 1370, had a mass added in his Missel in his honour with a miniature of Saint and Urban VI extended it to the whole Church, in 1382, during the marriage of Richard II with Anne of Bohemia. Finally Gregory XII, by a bubble of 1 May 1584, set his feast on 26 July. A part of his relics which the traditions say have been brought back from the East by Marie Salome and Marie Cléophas, the nieces of Anne, accompanied by Marie Madeleine, Lazarus, Martha, Sidoine, Maximin and some others in the first century, or by knights crossed from the end of the eleventh century, is still venerated.
