The Château de Gavaudun is a former castle, today ruined, whose remains stand on the French commune of Gavaudun in the department of Lot-et-Garonne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The former castle is classified as historical monuments.
Location: The castle is built on a long limestone rock, along the valley encassed by the Léde which allowed to descend from the south of the Périgord towards the Lot valley, on the commune of Gavaudun, in the French department of Lot-et-Garonne. It is located close to the Black Perigord, near the castle of Biron in Dordogne, and the castle of Bonaguil in Lot-et-Garonne.
History: The castle existed in 1160 when to drive away robbers or heretics, the bishop of Périgueux, Jean d'Assida, besieged him, captured and demolished according to the Gallia Christiana. The castle had to be rebuilt soon after. The castle was built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, on the main road between the Périgord and the Agenas.
