About

The Castle of Madic designates both the ruins of an exceptionally luxurious castle built on the municipality of Madic in the Cantal, which belonged to a branch of the family of Chabannes, and a modern castle built nearby in the early 19th century.

Description: The feudal castle is located on a hilltop overlooking the village of Madic in the south and the Dordogne valley in the north. The remains that can be observed today are those of the old fortress built between 1469 and 1480 by the governor and senechal of Limousin, Gilbert de Chabannes. On the foundations of the old medieval castle of rectangular plan and retaining only the Saint-Yves tower (which only collapsed about thirty years before the Revolution), Gilbert de Chabannes had powerful walls erected flanked at each corner of large circular towers. It was a real fortress with huge towers whose walls were more than 3 meters thick, and there was a fire to allow to garnish them with cannons. It was through a drawbridge thrown on the ditch that we had access to this fortress.
