About

Montréal-de-Sos is a castle located in the commune of Auzat in the Vicdessos valley, Ariège, France. This comtal castle was one of the most important castles of the Counts of Foix in the Middle Ages. Built at the end of the 12th century, it was preserved until the beginning of the 15th century, when it was voluntarily sank by the Counts of Foix.

In the state of ruins, its remains include a large enclosure flanked by two towers and an aristocratic quarter. The latter is gathered around a dungeon built on a motte, made rather unusual in high Ariège. Montréal-de-Sos was the subject of an archaeological excavation program from 2001 to 2017.
