About

Location: The castle is located in the French department of Maine-et-Loire, on the commune of Passavant-sur-Layon.

History: The Château de Passavant was built in the 11th century by Foulques Nerra, 3rd Earl of Anjou (987-1040) and the main founder of this great province. He fortified the whole Anjou through 27 castles and forts, including the castle of Passavant, south of his defence line. Dominating the Layon River, this exceptional site, first recognized for its strategic and military interest, has developed, throughout the ages, a vineyard vocation. The Château de Passavant was remodeled in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries and burned in the Revolution. It is now the Falloux family (family of Alfred de Falloux) owns the property.
