About

The Château de Savigny-sur-Grosne is located in the municipality of Savigny-sur-Grosne in Saône-et-Loire, at the top of a hill overlooking the valley.

Description: The castle was probably built in the 13th century, and then rebuilt in the 16th century. Its general structure is still legible in the walls and tower bases that remain: it is a large quadrilateral containing large round towers. It appears that the entrance, preceded by a ditch, was located to the north, between two large pavilions, of almost square plane, supported by a courtine. The pavilion to the west of this entrance is pierced by large windows with meneau and crusillon and flanked, in the angle it forms with the courtine, by a small rectangular tower containing a staircase with screws which is accessed by a door whose lintel, adorned with a trilobed arch, bears traces of a painted shield. A painted ceiling staircase, still cited at the beginning of the twentieth century, seems to have disappeared in the collapse of the interior floors of the pavilion. Mâconnais style houses, with gallery upstairs, stand outside the western and southern courtyards. The castle, private property, does not visit.
