château de Sombacour
The Château d'Usier is a former 11th century castle with ruins on the town of Sombacour in the Doubs department, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.
Situation: The remains of the castle are located in the French department of Doubs on the municipality of Sombacour.
History: The castle was founded in the 11th century by the lords of Joux. It was taken and destroyed in 1475 by the Swiss Confederates during the Wars of Burgundy. In a strategic position, it was completely restored. During the Ten-year War, in 1639, he witnessed a great battle between the Comte troops and the Swedes of Weymar. The victorious Swedes carried the fortress after many cannons. This castle was finally destroyed by Louis XIV in 1668.
Description: There are only a few remains of this stronghold. Only the ring ditch that protected the edge of the castle is perfectly discernible: the bases of the courtine that dominated it are visible. The left base of the carriageway door, equipped with its toad, was cleared a few years ago when a road to the river was extended.
