château de Suscinio
The castle of Suscinio, residence of the Dukes of Brittany, stands on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in the commune of Sarzeau (Morbihan), in the heart of what was once a vast wooded area. Built in the late Middle Ages, it is located in the Rhuys peninsula, now made up of salt marshes and meadows. The castle is in line with the great ducal residences emerging in Brittany under the impulse of powerful dukes.
Long left in a state of ruin, the castle was finally classified in 1840 after the visit of Prosper Mérimée, five years earlier, which placed it on the first list of historical monuments. At the time, the castle was visited for the romantic character of its ruins.
