Villemonteix Castle is located in Saint-Pardoux-les-Cards in the Creuse department and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
History: The castle was built in the 15th century. It allowed control of one of the accesses to Ahun. The Marquis de Biencourt, owner, fomented a monarchist plot there during the Revolution. In 1803 he moved to Charles de la Barre, Viscount de Bridiers. Aubert, widow of a notary of Boussac, acquired the estate in 1888. The Sallandrouze family, the manufacturer of Aubusson, later became its owner. The castle is classified as a historical monument by order of 14 June 1946. It is currently inhabited by its owner, Pierre Lajoix, who bought it in 1982 and is open to the public.
Architecture: It is a private castle dating from the 15th century, with a body of rectangular houses flanked by high round towers at the corners of its west facade and, on the opposite facade, a square staircase tower. Two of the angles are crowned with a corbelling scald. A round road with mâchicoulis dominates the walls and small openings in accolade decorate the interval of crows supporting mâchicoulis.
