Military cemetery: This cemetery, with an area of 21.25 ha, is located at the foot of the hill on which is located the Belleau wood where many of those buried in the cemetery lost their lives. Founded in the First World War by the U.S. grave registration services, this temporary cemetery was known as Cemetery No. 1764 - Belleau Wood of the U.S. Expeditionary Force. When the convention authorized, in 1921, its retention as one of the eight permanent cemeteries of the First World War in foreign land, an agreement was reached with the French government guaranteeing the enjoyment of the land occupied for life, free of any taxes or taxes.
