The German military cemetery of Carvin (Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Carvin) is a military cemetery in the district of Carvin, near Lens, in the department of Pas-de-Calais, in the Hauts-de-France region. It is the fifth largest necropolis in Nord-Pas-de-Calais. It is directly adjacent to the municipal cemetery.
This cemetery was created in the late autumn of 1914 by German soldiers, close to the front, to bury fighters killed in the sea race, the last stage of the war of movement characterizing the beginning of the First World War. The first burials took place during clashes of the race to the sea. Later, until 1918, other fighting destroyed a large number of German soldiers, notably in the spring and autumn of 1915 and 1917, during the battles between Arras and Armenières, then the German attacks of March-April 1918 and the Allied counter-offensive in summer and autumn 1918.
In the last year, 2,000 fallen men were buried. After the war ended, the French authorities enlarged the cemetery: burials were added to the cemetery...
