collégiale Saint-Barnard
The collegiate Saint-Barnard de Romans-sur-Isère is a former collegiate founded in 838 by Saint Barnard on the banks of the Isère. The collegiate church is classified as historical monuments by the list of 1840, supplemented by a classification in 1942 for the classification of plots of the church's surroundings.
Barnard, archbishop of Vienna, built in 838 a Benedictine abbey on the right bank of Isère, near a busy ford. He dedicated his monastery to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Barnard died in 842. He was canonized in 944. The name of Saint-Barnard will gradually prevail. The first church built is dedicated to three martyrs in Vienna: Exupère, Félicien and Séverin, whose relics Barnard translating in this new monastery. In 860, the abbey was devastated by the Normans during their raid in the Rhône valley. It was rebuilt from 908 by Abbé David, who was installed by the archbishop of Vienna Alexander.
