collégiale Saint-Pierre d'Avignon
Saint-Pierre d'Avignon Basilica is a Gothic Catholic basilica located in Avignon on Saint-Pierre Square. Built on the site of a first construction of the seventh century, its current reconstruction dates back to 1358.
History: According to tradition, a first building was built in the 7th century and ravaged by the sarrazins. On its ruins, Foulques II began a reconstruction (the first mention in the texts of Saint Peter's Church dates from that time). It was the generosity of Cardinal Pierre des Prés, in 1358, that allowed the construction of canon buildings and the cloister, which had now disappeared. Pope Innocent VI built it in collegiate form in the 14th century. In the 15th century, the nave was elongated and equipped with new chapels. The court dates from 1486, the bell tower from 1495. The decorations of the facade began in 1512. As early as 1840, it was classified as a historical monument. On May 4, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI gave the Collège Saint-Pierre the title of minor basilica. Its remarkable carved wooden doors overlook the Place Saint Pierre, not far from the house and the printing house Aubanel.
