Archaeological site
fanum de Fonteny
The Sanctuary of Fonteny is a Gallo-Roman shrine located in Dampierre, France. The site, located on the edge of the ancient path from Lyon to Trier, is used as a sanctuary from the end of the Gaulish period to the Lower Roman Empire. Composed of more than ten small temples, it is distinguished by the richness of its statuary representing or evoking Mercury, god of travelers, as well as the Roman goddess Maia. The only excavations carried out on the site in 1897-1898 were following its accidental discovery a few years earlier.
