ermitage Notre-Dame de Font-Romeu
The Hermitage Notre-Dame de Font-Romeu is located in the commune of Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales (region Occitanie), about a kilometre north of the city center, on the departmental road 618 towards Bolquère. The facades and roofs of the hermitage buildings, the chapel with the decoration of the camaril and the altarpiece were listed as historical monuments in 1999.
History: Built in the 17th century, and several times enlarged, the current buildings cover an older pilgrimage site, dating from the middle of the Middle Ages. They are organized around a rectangular courtyard, closed to the north by the Notre Dame chapel. The chapel was completed in the 17th century, in 1686, and was redesigned in the 18th century. It houses three altarpieces, the most remarkable of which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was partly made by Catalan sculptor Joseph Sunyer between 1704 and 1707. One of the artist's sons rests in the church, as evidenced by the funeral inscription visible in the wall of the building, opposite the entrance gate.
