grotte d'Aurignac
The prehistoric shelter of Aurignac is a rock shelter containing an archaeological deposit, located in the commune of Aurignac, in Haute-Garonne (Occitanie, France). Occupied with the Upper Paleolithic, he gave his name to the Aurignacian, a prehistoric culture from the beginning of this period. Discovered in the 19th century and studied by Lartet in 1860, this shelter is one of the prehistoric sites that have been landmarks in the history of Prehistory: it is one of those that have been used to establish the existence of prehistoric man, at a time still very marked by biblical dogmas and which strongly refused to recognize such a great anteriority to Man. It was classified as a historical monument by order of 26 May 1921.
