The Bird Marsh is a wildlife conservation centre and discovery park dedicated to the animal species of Oléron Island. Located on the territory of the municipalities of Dolus-d'Oléron and Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron, this vast protected area covers an area of nearly fifty hectares, including ten hectares for the park alone. It is affiliated with the National Union of Wildlife Conservation Centres and is one of the fourteen natural poles of Charente-Maritime.
The creation of the backup centre took place in 1982, at the initiative of Alain Formon, a enthusiast. Former salt marshes surrounded by oak trees form the framework of this set designed primarily to treat sick or weakened animals. Veterinarians, as well as volunteers, work to relieve animals in distress who, depending on the seriousness of their case, are placed in infirmary and/or aviaries adapted for rehabilitation. If the animals are too handicapped to return to their place in nature, they are placed in the discovery park.
