The funeral monument of Héloïse and Abélard is a remarkable funeral monument of the Père-Lachaise cemetery (20th arrondissement of Paris). The ashes of this couple of medieval intellectuals have known several destinations during the history: the priory Saint-Marcel (1142), the abbey of Paraclet (1142-1792), the church Saint-Laurent de Nogent-sur-Seine (1792-1800), the museum of the French Monuments in Paris (1800-1817) and finally the cemetery of the Père-Lachaise (since 1817).
Access: The monument is located in the 7th division of the cemetery (first driveway on the right entering via the boulevard de Ménilmontant, metro station Philippe Auguste (line 2).
Heloïse and Abélard were the founders of the Abbey of Paraclet in the 12th century. Abélard died in 1142 at the Priory of Saint-Marcel, which was dependent on the Abbey of Cluny, and was buried in the chapel of Our Lady of the Priory. At the request of Héloïse, the abbot of Cluny Pierre le Venerable, who has admired her since her teens, authorizes the transfer of her husband's body to the Paraclete.
