mémorial de Coudehard-Montormel
The memorial of Coudehard-Montormel or simply memorial of Montormel is a museum of history located on Mount Ormel, in the communes of Coudehard and Mont-Ormel in the department of Orne and the Normandy region. It is specially dedicated to the history of the Battle of the Falaise Pocket (or Falaise-Chambois pocket), the last episode of the Battle of Normandy. It is in fact a museum space located very exactly at the top of Hill 262, where the pocket of Falaise was officially closed on August 21, 1944, explaining the fact that the museum is located in the countryside. It consists of two sites:
the exterior monument, at the top of the hill, is a space of recollection that dominates the Dives valley and the plain where the last battles of this battle took place. It was erected for the 20th anniversary of the battle in 1965; the museum-memorial itself, on the very side of the hill, built for the 50th anniversary of the battle, in 1994.
