The royal menagerie of Versailles was Louis XIV's first major project in Versailles. It was built before the Grand Canal was created. Its construction was entrusted to architect Louis Le Vau, who began work in 1663. Abandoned from the French Revolution, it fell into ruins and was destroyed in 1902.
