abbaye du Lys
The former royal abbey Notre-Dame du Lys, now in ruins, is a Cistercian abbey of nuns founded by Blanche de Castille and Saint Louis in 1244. It is located on the edge of the city centre of Dammarie-les-Lys, four kilometres downstream of Melun, in the south of the Seine-et-Marne. Delivered to looting, transformed into an oxen enclosure during the Revolution, then sold as a romantic ruin to a Swiss in 1796, the abbey was classified as a Historical Monument by order of 30 December 1930.
