The Abbey of Solignac is a Benedictine abbey founded by Éloi de Noyon in 632 or 638 in Solignac, near Limoges. A community of Benedictine monks lived there from the Old Century to the end of the Xviiith Century, and again from 2021 ("priory Saint Joseph of Solignac"). Meanwhile, the disused abbey served as a boarding school for young girls, a porcelain factory and then a seminar. It is a stage from via Lemovicensis to Compostela.
The abbey of Solignac was founded in the Old Century by Saint Eloi, the future bishop of Noyon, who asked King Dagobert I the village of Solemniacum (the land of Solignac) to found a monastery there. This town was located on the site of an old Gallo-Roman villa named Solemnius, belonging to the royal estate. According to historian Fustel de Coulanges, the name of Solignac derives from the name of the primitive Roman owner Solemnis who was the first estate.
