église Notre-Dame-de-Grâces
The Notre-Dame-de-Grâces church in Cotignac, or the Notre-Dame des Graces shrine, is a Catholic church located in Cotignac, in the French department of Var, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The church was built in 1519 after the apparitions of Our Lady of Grace to a simple peasant, Jean de La Baume, on the same place. Religious are assigned to the sanctuary and very quickly attached to the Oratory congregation.
At first modest regional sanctuary, the place becomes a prominent pilgrimage site when Brother Augustin undressed, comes officially on pilgrimage from Paris to pray to the Virgin in order to grant King Louis XIII an heir. The pregnancy of Queen Anne of Austria and the birth of the future Louis XIV are seen as a "miracle" granted by Our Lady of Graces. This event draws attention to the sanctuary, and it will remain linked to the monarchy until the Revolution.
During the Revolution, revolutionaries plunder and completely shave the sanctuary. In 1810, the church was rebuilt by the locals. It is taken over by the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.
