About

The Palais du Grabatoire is the episcopal residence of the Bishop of Le Mans. It is an ancient canonial palace built in the first half of the 16th century for Jean de Couthardy. The palace is located in the district of the Plantagenet City, historic heart of Le Mans.

The building faces the western gate of Saint-Julien Cathedral, Place du Cardinal Grente. His name was commonly reduced in Grabatoire or the hotel of the Grabatoire. Its surface is unusual in size.

Very few documents, books or magazines have traced the history of the building. This is one of the most unknown monuments in the city. The Grabatory has been listed as a historic monument since 1927.
