About

The Palaeosite is a prehistory interpretation centre located in the commune of Saint-Césaire, 10 km east of Saintes and 15 km west of Cognac, Charente-Maritime. It is located near the archaeological site of La Roche in Pierrot, where the skeleton of a Neandertalian individual was discovered in 1979, called "Pierrette". The Palaeosite, owned by the Department of Charente-Maritime, was designed under the aegis of the world's leading specialists in Neandertal and under the scientific direction of Professors Yves Coppens and Bernard Vandermeersch. It is one of the most visited tourist and cultural sites in Charente-Maritime, being listed among the 17 must-see sites in the department.
