About

The François-Mitterrand Bridge is an art work spanning the Saône between the departments of Saône-et-Loire and Ain, between the city of Mâcon and Grièges in the Ain. It was inaugurated on 12 September 2009.

Presentation: 252 m long and 14 m wide, it is dimensioned to allow 10,000 vehicles to cross the Saône every day, thus relieving the St. Lawrence Bridge. The bridge cost €13 million and was financed equally by the Saône-et-Loire General Council and the Ain General Council.

Polemic around the name of the bridge: A polemic surrounded the fact of giving the name of the former French president François Mitterrand to the bridge: indeed, Arnaud Montebourg, then president of the General Council of Saône-et-Loire, had been accused by his critics of having been the sole decision-maker in this choice.
