porte Saint-Nicolas
The Porte Saint-Nicolas is a town gate located in Ervy-le-Châtel, France.
Description: The Saint-Nicolas gate consists of two stone towers. A pedestrian walkway and a road pass under that door.
Location: The town gate is located in the commune of Ervy-le-Châtel, in the French department of Aube.
History: The Porte Saint-Nicolas was built in the 16th century and bears its name from a small statuette located in the centre of the door. It is the only medieval gate remaining in the Dawn.
When the city was surrounded by ramparts and ditches, it allowed access to the city with the Saint-Antoine gate, which was demolished in the early eighteenth century; A third entry was made north in 1836. The gate towers were rebuilt in 1837. The north tower was a prison of passage and the door welcomed the court audience. The drawbridge was replaced by a stone bridge. The building was listed as historic monuments in 1926.
