About

The pro-Cathedral Sainte Marie de Bastia is a former Roman Catholic cathedral located in Bastia, Haute-Corse department. It was the seat of the diocese of Mariana and Accia between 1570 and 1802, the date of its abolition and its attachment to the diocese of Ajaccio. It is called in Corsica Santa Maria or Santa Marì.

The cathedral is considered the most prestigious in Corsica: this is where the transfer of powers between the outgoing governor and the new governor was carried out. The first presented to his successor the keys and sceptre of the Kingdom of Corsica, placed on a silver platter. In the choir two thrones were facing each other: on one side sat the bishop, on the other the governor.

After registration in 1929, Sainte-Marie has been classified as a historical monument since 3 February 2000.
