Avesnes-le-Sec Communal Cemetery Extension

Location: This cemetery is located at the western exit of the village, rue du Calvaire, right next to the communal cemetery, a little away from the paved road that leads to Iwuy.

Avesnes-le-Sec Communal Cemetery Extension

History: The village of Avesnes-le-Sec, which was occupied by German troops in late August 1914, remained far from the fighting until October, when it was taken over by British troops.At the armistice, it contained 100 burials from 12 to 26 October 1918, including 46 Seaforth Highlanders and 41 Gordon Highlanders. After the armistice, other graves were brought back from nearby cemeteries.

Character: This cemetery now includes 114 First World War burials. The extension was designed by W. H. Cowlishaw.
